Peat free compost range on sale Royal Highland Show Outdoor Living Area Stand 430 -
AN AWARD-WINNING peat free Wool Compost range is to be extended to include a Scottish-made garden compost – and Scottish farmers are being sought to supply bracken and sheep’s wool for the new sustainable product.
Dalefoot Composts, creators of the ground-breaking Wool Compost range, is exhibiting for the first time at the Royal Highland Show and will be showcasing its trial topping garden compost. For gardeners, Dalefoot’s compost cleverly harnesses the natural water retention and nitrogen properties of wool and the potash benefits of bracken. The compost has recently trialled and tested* as one of the best peat free growing mediums you can buy.
Farmers, who supply Dalefoot, benefit by securing an alternative outlet for their wool, often worth less than its clip, and are asked to harvest their bracken, an ideal income-generating solution for this ever-invasive plant.
Fifth generation farmer Simon Bland, who runs Dalefoot Composts with his environmental scientist partner Jane, said: “Our Wool Compost range has been very successful as it caters perfectly for environmentally-aware gardeners who want to opt for a really good peat free compost for all their growing needs. Up until now we’ve sourced our bracken and wool from hill farmers in the Lake District but, to keep up with demand, we’d really like to launch a compost made in Scotland, so are keen to hear from farmers north of the Border.”
Farmers interested in supplying Dalefoot should contact Simon on 01931 713281.
Sowing seeds, potting on seedlings, filling tubs and baskets, top dressing borders, improving clay soils and even ericaceous planting can all now be carried out using Dalefoot’s peat free compost range. All the composts use natural old-fashioned ingredients but with a totally modern twist.
The eco-conscious range includes Wool Potting Compost, Ericaceous Potting Compost, double-strength Wool Compost and Ericaceous Wool compost mixes that can be mixed with garden soil, Lakeland Gold for clay-busting and Wool Compost for Seeds. The company has also just launched a very special version of its peat free compost using wool from the iconic Herdwick sheep. The new Herdwick blend is a special addition to the Double Strength Wool Compost product.
Available by mail order at www.dalefootcomposts.co.uk, the composts are priced from £10.99 each, down to £7.50 each for deliveries of 50 bags. The new Herdwick Double Strength Wool Compost and Ericaceous Potting Compost are available to order in 30 litre bags. There is a small, one-off delivery charge of £5 on bag orders and £9 on pallets. There is also a Bulk Buy Scheme for allotment holders, gardening groups, friends and family. The composts are also sold by a small number of selected nurseries and garden centres.
Dalefoot Composts are also now looking for trade outlets across Scotland.
