Herdwick sheep with lamb

We are launching a very special version of our Double Strength Wool Compost using wool from the iconic Herdwick sheep.

As Guardians of England's finest landscape - the English Lake District - the Herdwick is England's most hardy breed of hill sheep, able to forage from the highest and steepest crags to help maintain the much-loved landscape. We source un-dipped Herdwick fleeces directly from Lakeland hill farmers, providing them an assured price for their otherwise low-grade fleece that costs more to clip than its value, which in recent years has simply been burned.

This tweaked Double Strength Wool compost product achieves good flowers and fruit and is the perfect peat-free compost for environmentally aware gardeners, who want to use a little bit of Lakeland in their garden.

Bracken, the other essential ingredient in the compost, is also harvested from the same hills. We have blended a unique growing medium of Lakeland provenance which should provide a small economic boost to the fragile income of the Lakeland Hill farmer.

Beatrix Potter would have hopefully approved!
